Progress!Since the last
update 300 foot of Railroad Track has been laid on the West side of the TSU
shop area extending between Dewey and Hobson Street. This will ultimately be
the first area where the trolley can operate as a demonstration. The
materials and labor were donated by Mr. G. W. Jackson of Railroad Salvage and
Restoration out of Joplin, Missouri.
Locomotive Repair Services has made one trolley pole as a prototype for the
electrical wire above the trolley. More are to follow. It should be installed
within the coming months next to recently constructed track. The plans are
then to install the new truck and wheels under the trolley which will
ultimately be the power source and final truck assembly. Until Maggie M is
actually operating this will improve the static display's realism.
Also added this year was a third member of the group on the trolley, the first
male of the group, and he is the conductor. The caboose has been entirely
repainted inside and out and a diorama of the old Harvey House has been added
courtesy of Pete Egan.
A special recognition plaque was added to the display this spring honoring one
of the founding members, Jim Hubbard, and the plaza around the trolley is now
known as "JIM HUBBARD PLAZA"
One new member of the trolley group has been taken in, that being
CASEY JONES, who was adopted by Shirley and Charlie Brooks sometime
back. A little forlorn puppy about at death's door came to the trolley fence
seeking shelter and help, and he made a good decision; he now lives the life
of a king, at no other than Shirley Brooks' side. Incidentally he is almost a
recreation of a dog her dad had so many years ago and loved dearly. He is now
one of the Brooks family.
So, all of you are invited to participate as the progress continues towards
restoration of the trolley. While it has taken longer than anticipated, it
has been a worth while project, and regardless of where it may end up in the
restoration effort it has been a resounding success, another icon of Route 66
now, this time in the Sapulpa area. Many visitors come by on a daily basis to
take a tour of her, the Maggie M. It adds to the charm of the community.
